The DC United striker called time on a goal-laden career with the Three Lions last year but will reportedly return to Gareth Southgate's side for a fundraising charity match at Wembley Stadium on November 16 (AEDT).

According to The Sun, the 33-year-old will wear the captain's armband one final time for his 120th appearance, giving "England fans the chance to say a fond farewell to a much-loved player while raising money for worthwhile causes."

All proceeds from the match will go towards the Wayne Rooney Foundation, which could raise more than £500,000 (A$899,000) for various children's charities.

Rooney has scored 53 goals for England, the most by any player in the nation's history and four more than fellow legend Sir Bobby Charlton.
