Emir Spahic, who was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen for fighting with a steward after its DFB-Pokal defeat to Bayern Munich earlier this month, has been banned for three months by the German Football Association.

Spahic's contract with Leverkusen was terminated when footage of a clash with a steward at the BayArena emerged.

The 34-year-old accepted the club's decision and has also accepted a ban until July 12, the German FA announced via a statement on its website.

He will also pay a fine of 20,000 euros ($28,000) for his conduct but will be able to resume his career come the start of next season

"I hope that Emir can play as normally somewhere else from the start of next season," said Leverkusen's director of sport Rudi Voller to the Bild newspaper.

A return to Leverkusen has been ruled out but clubs in Turkey are believed to be interested in signing him.
