Stage 13 a missed opportunity for Porte

The first 2016 Tour de France time trial was one where Richie Porte was supposed to make up lost ground but at the end of a tough 37.5km stage from Bourg-Saint-Andéol to La Caverne du Pont-d'Arc. He did but was left wanting more from the effort.

Porte (BMC) improved his overall placing after posting a time of 52min 23sec for the distance (3min 8sec behind stage winner Tom Dumoulin of Giant-Alpecin). He moved up to 8th place after sitting outside the top-ten, but fell further behind race leader Chris Froome (Sky), and is now 4min 27sec in arrears.

A podium place is still a strong possibility if the last week of racing breaks his way, but another day of struggle will see those dreams parked until 2017.

"It was such a hard time trial. You couldn't really hear anything on the radio so I was just riding off feel. It was so windy out there, I'm not really sure of my times or anything," Porte said.

"I wasn't really happy with my sensations, it hurt a lot. Yesterday with the motorbike doesn't really help much either. We'll see how the other GC guys fare. I think that the battle was never against the big time trialists.

"There's still a few guys to come in so we'll see how it was from that. I'm a little bit sore from yesterday. It's quite disappointing to be honest. But I'm sure the race is not over yet."
