The Premier League's five biggest flops

Which Premier League players turned out to be the worst signings of the 2017-18 season?

Alvaro Morata

The Spaniard’s goal-scoring ability was plain to see at Real Madrid and Juventus, and his first half of the season was actually quite good, with nine goals in 16 league appearances.

But poor form and injuries caused a terrible latter half of the campaign – in 2018 the 25-year-old only managed one league goal.

Chelsea's record signing was in and out of the team and ultimately hasn’t lived up to his $105 million price tag.

Victor Lindelof

Signed for $63 million from Benfica, making him the Red Devils' most expensive ever defender.

Coming with a reputation as a ball-playing centre-back, Lindelof never earned Mourinho’s faith or a regular starting spot.

He might have good distribution but the Swede was poor at the more important job of actual defending.

Only made 17 Premier League appearances with five clean sheets.

Wayne Rooney

You could really label any of Everton’s pre-season signings flops (Keane, Klaassen, Sandro), but Rooney arrived with the biggest reputation.

Despite a short purple patch when he bagged five goals in four games (three penalties), Rooney ultimately wasn’t the hero Everton fans were hoping for.

In all of 2018, the forward registered zero goals and zero assists.

After reacting furiously to early substitutions against Manchester City and Liverpool, the 32-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the MLS with DC United, suggesting neither he nor Everton are keen to continue together.

Tiemoue Bakayoko

A highly impressive box-to-box player in the thrilling Monaco side that won Ligue 1 last season and made the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, but he failed to fill the void left by Nemanja Matic in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield.

The $72 million Frenchman was inconsistent and appeared to struggle with Conte’s tactics.

Joe Hart

The former England number one was in and out of the team as he, and West Ham, endured a poor season.

He played 19 league matches, conceding 35 goals and keeping just 4 clean sheets.

Needed to impress if he wanted a ticket to the 2018 FIFA World Cup – he didn’t, and has missed out to Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Nick Pope.
