'The season starts now' - Chelsea's Alonso vows to take Perth seriously

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso says he cannot wait to play Perth Glory as the club prepare to avenge their rather disappointing 2017-18 season.

Antonio Conte's men finished fifth in the Premier League last season and crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16, before defeating Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

And with the Blues back in training over the weekend, Alonso hopes Chelsea's clash with Perth Glory on July 23 will be the first step to a successful season ahead.

"Now we want to get back to the top level in the league after a not very good year, and pre-season is an important stage of that," Alonso told Chelseafc.com.

"We have got two weeks to get ourselves into shape and prepare for it [Perth Glory]. The season starts now."
The 27-year-old will visit Australia for the first time and hopes to give fans at the 60,000-seater Optus Stadium a memorable performance.

"It's always exciting to play in new places and I hope we get to see what the city has to offer," he said.

"It's a great opportunity for us to see our fans from the other side of the world. We feel their support throughout the year but we know they can't always see us play.

"I have heard the stadium is really cool and maybe it won’t be as hot there as it has been in England! We hope to put on a good show for the fans. We have to take these games seriously."

The new-look Glory will also hope to make a good impression on their own fans as they prepare for an upcoming A-League season under new head coach Tony Popovic.

Popovic has already signed Ivan Franjic, Tomislav Mrcela, Brendon Santalab, Matthew Spiranovic, Tando Velaphi and Fabio Ferreira for the 2018-19 season.
