The show must go on for football

Security concerns postponed several matches across Europe, but this morning's moving reception for France at Wembley epitomises why the show must go on.

Football is an escape for many, a reprieve from life's challenges, and we need football to shine light into our lives now more than ever.

Just four days after the terror attacks in Paris, French players turned up to play England at Wembley. Fans from both sides stood together, bellowing out La Marseillaise in unison.

The solidarity shown by the greater football community in this time of grief is why we need as many matches going ahead as possible.

Of course, when there are legitimate safety concerns, neccesary precaution needs to be taken but where possible, the best way to counteract these despicable acts of violence is to soldier on.

The French players could have stayed at home.

The Belgian players did, postponing their game against Spain.

The Germans and the Dutch had the best intentions, but their match was called off after security concerns in Hannover.

It was refreshing to see players and fans back out there, enjoying the beautiful game in an act of defiance against the weekend's atrocities.

English and French fans signing the French national anthem, together as one, shows how football counteracts the violence which pries people apart.

Not giving in means not cowing to those trying to curtail our way of life, nor living in fear of what might happen next.

The best thing we can all do is get back on the horse, and keep doing what we always do.

Football is in the same boat. The show must go on.
