Brosque will conclude his 18-year career as the Sky Blues' most decorated player, top goalscorer and, according to club chairman Scott Barlow, "Sydney FC’s greatest ever player".

A Socceroo in his own right, Brosque found the back of the net most recently against rivals Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday, and though coach Steve Corica previously urged his star striker to reconsider his decision, the 35-year-old felt the time was right.

"Football and Sydney FC have allowed me to have some of the most incredible experiences I could ever have imagined," Brosque said on Monday.

"To have been able to do something I’ve loved ever since I was a young boy, and for this long, is incredibly humbling.

"But after 18 years playing the game, I feel the time is right now to retire."
