Victory brass must 'leave their egos at the door', says former director

Former Melbourne Victory director Richard Wilson believes the board will need to "leave their egos at the door" if the club are to get back to their best on the pitch.

The four-time A-League champions have come under an increasing amount of pressure in recent weeks, typified by a supporter protest during Monday's training session.

Fresh from an embarrassing 6-0 defeat to cross-town rivals Melbourne City on Saturday, the protest helped to highlight the number of poor performances that have plagued the club since their Grand Final win in 2018.

Victory brass have cut a rather quiet collective figure since the protest and Wilson believes the only way they can move forward is if true changes are made.

"I'm sure they're well and truly talking about where the club's at and where the team's at, and what are the things that caused them to have a bad start to the season on the field," Wilson said during Wednesday's episode of TWG Live.

"I think they've got to be brave, I think they've got to be courageous, I think you've got to leave all the egos at the door.

"I think they've got to say, 'let's be really honest - have we got the right people leading this organisation, and if we do, how do we get out of this and how do we progress?'.

"Or, 'what changes do we need to make, if it's personally, structurally or culturally' - they're big questions and I'm sure that they are capable of making them if they leave their egos at the door."

Wilson opted to part ways with the Victory in February, citing the direction the board had taken in recent seasons.
