Victory simply the best says Finkler fan Valeri

International midfielder Carl Valeri rates A-League premier Melbourne Victory as the most attack-minded team he has ever played for and playmaker Gui Finkler one of his most gifted teammates.

Valeri, who joined Victory in the off-season after an 11-year stint in Italy, is savouring the third major honour of his career after winning the Serie C championship with Grosseto and that of Serie B with Sassuolo.

Valeri, who played for Australia at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2011 AFC Asian Cup, was one of Victory's most consistent players on its way to the Premiers' Plate and is full of praise for the club's playing culture.

"Victory is the most attack-minded team I have played for, definitely," Valeri said.

"When I played for Sassuolo we played an attacking style of football but nothing like how we play at Victory.

"We do work on our defence a lot, though, and I think we have defended really well throughout the season.

"I found a lot of enthusiasm coming back to Victory, I have always said that.

"It is such a great club to be part of. I feel all the players complement each other nicely.

"We work a lot on our team structure.

"In midfield Mark and I have a good understanding of how each other plays. We then have Gui in front of us who is a one of the best players I have played with. I wish I played alongside him for my whole career.

"I love his style of play but I could go on about every player, I really could."

Valeri scored two fantastic goals this season that would be contenders for goal of the season.

It would appear that his game has been enhanced by Victory's positive approach but it's the unglamorous role of defensive midfielder, battling in the trenches, that gives Valeri most satisfaction.

"Look, I enjoyed the goal I scored against Western Sydney Wanderers, which was my personal highlight of the season," he said of the right-foot volley that nearly ripped the net.

"I don't think I will ever score a goal like that again.

"Yet my qualities better serve helping the defenders.

"I love playing defensive midfield but at Victory I find myself higher up the pitch.

"There has to be an understanding when I do venture forward and Mark (Milligan) and Rashid (Mahazi) always cover for me as I do for them. There is a good understanding between us."

Valeri said he had no doubt that one of the major reasons for Victory's premiership success was the collective effort of the whole squad.

"We worked hard this year at training and I mean everyone," Valeri explained.

"We have a good group of guys and honestly most of the credit goes to the boys who didn't play all the time.

"They were the ones pushing everyone along at training.

"It's hard not playing regularly and for them to come in to training and push everyone and make everyone work harder has been amazing.

"It is no surprise that when they were called upon they were ready."

Valeri said the squad's esprit de corps was rewarded by winning the title at home.

"Winning the premiership at home, with the whole team, all the staff together in front of our awesome fans and supporting families, was an unforgettable experience," he said.
