Victory youngster completes meteoric rise with African Cup of Nations debut

Melbourne Victory breakthrough star Elvis Kamsoba's rapid rise has gone to even greater heights with the 22-year-old refugee making his African Cup of Nations debut for his country of birth Burundi.

Kamsoba was a second half substitute for Burundi as they went down 1-0 to Nigeria on Sunday (AEST) in the country's first ever African Cup of Nations match coming on in the 59th minute.

It is stark contrast to six months ago when the pint-sized speedster was plying his trade for Victorian state league club Avondale before his form caught the attention of the Victory who signed him to an 18-month deal during the January transfer window.

The signing of Kamsoba proved to be a brilliant bit of business for Kevin Muscat with the youngster quickly becoming a fan favourite for his scintillating speed and attack first mentality.

Born in Burundi, the 22-year-old spent the first few years of his life in a Tanzanian refugee camp before coming to Australia when he was 12. 

Incredibly Kamsoba had originally shunned the chance to play for Burundi during their African Cup of Nations qualifiers in March because of his hope to one day represent the Socceroos.

However, he had a change of heart after Burundi clinched their maiden spot at the tournament which this year is being held in Egypt. 

Kamsoba joins Stoke City striker Saido Berahino in Burundi's team which will continue their AFCON experience with matches against Group B rivals Madagascar and Guinea on June 27 and June 30.
