"Vuelta 2018 can not start without knowing who won in 2017": race director

Vuelta a Espana race director Javier Guillén has added his voice to the throng calling for a resolution to the outstanding Froome salbutamol case.

But given the adverse analytical finding came at his race and by the time it comes around again, nearly 12 months afterwards, the Vuelta boss perhaps has a more vested interest in a resolution.

At a press conference for the 2018 edition, Guillén said Froome's case should've been resolved already and not just by the time his race starts on 25 August.

"Time is not helping us," Guillén said, as reported in Spanish news site Marca. "He should have known before the Giro d'Italia. I hope that it is known before the Tour de France.

"It is a topic that should be resolved for the good of the Tour de France, for the sake of Sky but above all for the good of cycling in general.

"The Tour is the most important event, it reaches many millions of spectators and I think we all deserve to have a resolution.
"(But) it is absolutely necessary for the 2018 Vuelta to start knowing who has won the Vuelta of 2017. We can not find ourselves a year later without knowing what has happened."
Froome, who won the Giro d'Italia for the first time in May tested positive for twice the permitted concentration of the asthma medication salbutamol in his system during last year's Vuelta which he won.

Under UCI rules the Team Sky rider is eligible to continue competing until the ruling body has reached a verdict.

Guillén also said he is hoping Vincenzo Nibali and Fabio Aru will line-up for this year's Vuelta, but said he can't yet confirm their participation.
