Vuelta TT start to break with tradition

Vuelta a España race director Javier Guillén announced Monday that the 2018 edition of the race will get underway with a 10km individual time trial in Málaga, breaking with a nine year run of team time trials to kick off the Spanish Grand Tour.

According to local newspaper Diario Sur, the opening time trial will begin in one of the city’s biggest arts centres, the Centre Pompidou.

If true, this will be the first time the Vuelta has begun with an individual time trial since 2009, when Fabian Cancellara won as the Vuelta got underway in the Netherlands. Since then, the Vuelta has begun exclusively with team time trials.

In a push to be 'as original as possible,' the August 25 opening stage of the race will set out from a museum – Málaga's Pompidou Centre – and conclude on a street that features a long section of marble.
The Málaga province is set to host three stages and the start of a fourth, according to the newspaper.

Guillén also offered a few more details about the climbs expected to feature in the Vuelta, with a climbing-heavy race again expected.

"We are once again betting on uphill finishes, which could number between eight, those that are already secured, and 10," Guillén said. "Of those, two finishes will be brand new."

The official Vuelta a España presentation will take place in January.
