General classification revelations Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) and Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange) may be unknown quantities over a three-week Tour, but the evidence from Stage 15 suggests both riders could be well placed to hang on to second and third place respectively.
White jersey holder Adam Yates put in a 'measured and consistent' ride, according to Orica-BikeExchange sport director Matt White.
Yates seemed quietly pleased with his performance.
Mollema said it was a hard day, but a good one.
"For two or three kilometers it was really steep, and Sky did a good pace on the climb, especially after the attacks from Aru and Valverde," said Mollema.
"Then the last two kilometers of the climb were not so hard. Froome and Quintana almost crashed at the top, it was a bit tricky, especially in the descent."
The question now is whether both riders can sustain their breakout performances through the four crucial Alpine stages yet to come.
