Yates' unfinished Giro business

Pretty in pink for much of last year's edition, Simon Yates is hoping to be in the leader's jersey when it counts - after the final stage of the 2019 Giro d'Italia's final stage in Verona.

Last year, the Englishman came agonisingly close to overall victory, despite finishing 21st on GC. He won three stages and led the race for 13, before succumbing to the pace set by eventual race winner Chris Froome on Stage 19, in one of cycling's most infamous comebacks.

Yates' overall victory at the 2018 Vuelta a Espana quelled some of the Giro disappointment, but he still feels the burn.

“In a way I have unfinished business at the Giro," the 26-year-old said. "But I would just like to have another go.

"We were so close last year...that’s what’s driving me at the moment, and that’s what I have the passion to get out of bed for every morning.

“There are many strong rivals, it’s a very packed field. I wouldn’t really like to single out anyone, I think they are all very strong and a lot of them have already won week-long races this year.

“I like to race aggressively but you can’t always do that unfortunately and that’s what I really learnt from last season. I will apply those lessons and hopefully come off with the win.”

Jack Bauer, Brent Bookwalter, Esteban Chaves, Luke Durbridge, Lucas Hamilton, Chris Juul-Jensen, and Mikel Nieve will support Yates in his Giro bid for Mitchelton-Scott.
