'You'll Never Walk Alone' singer Gerry Marsden dies aged 78

Gerry Marsden, lead singer of the British band Gerry and the Pacemakers, whose version of You'll Never Walk Alone became an iconic anthem for his local team Liverpool FC, as well as other clubs has died aged 78.

Marsden's family announced his death on Sunday (UK time) "after a short illness which was an infection in his heart."

While 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was originally released in 1945 as part of the Broadway musical Carousel, it is the Gerry and the Pacemakers 1963 version that was a hit in Liverpool and is now played over the PA system at Anfield.
Sir Paul McCartney said that Gerry and the Pacemakers were The Beatles' main rival on the local scene in Liverpool in the 1960s.
Marsden told Liverpool FC's website in 2013 that the song was almost instantly adopted by the Kop when it topped the charts in 1963.

"I remember being at Anfield and before every kick-off they used to play the top 10 from number 10 to number one, and so You'll Never Walk Alone was played before the match. I was at the game and the fans started singing it," Marsden said.

"When it went out of the top 10 they took the song off the playlist and then for the next match the Kop were shouting 'Where's our song?' So they had to put it back on.

"Now, every time I go to the game I still get goose bumps when the song comes on and I sing my head off."

One of the most impressive renditions of the football anthem came in Melbourne in 2013 when Liverpool played Melbourne Victory at the MCG.
The song is sung by Liverpool fans before and at the end of every match.
It has also been adopted by numerous other clubs - most notably Germany's Borussia Dortmund and Scotland's Celtic.
Marsden is survived by his wife Pauline, whom he married in 1965. The couple have two daughters.
