Chilwell limped off during the Blues' 2-1 win on Thursday (AEDT) and learned the extent of his injury following a scan on Friday.

The 25-year-old figured to form a significant part of Gareth Southgate's plans in Qatar, but will now miss at least three months due to a "significant" tear.

It's not the first setback the former Leicester defender has faced in recent years, having missed much of last season with an ACL injury.

Nevertheless, it's come at the worst time; with the World Cup just two weeks away, and Southgate yet to announce his 26-man squad.
"Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup," Chilwell posted on Twitter.

"It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately this won’t be possible following my scan results. I’ll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support."

England are scheduled to face Wales, the USA, and Iran in Group B.
