Harry Kewell’s tactics to beat Tunisia

Socceroos legend Harry Kewell wants Australia to play with speed and aggression when it faces Tunisia in a must win FIFA World Cup clash on Saturday (AEDT) at Al Janoub Stadium.

The African side lined up in a 3-4-2-1 formation as they held Denmark to a goalless draw in the opening match in Group D.

Kewell, who is currently an assistant to Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, sat down with SBS Sport to look at how the Socceroos should approach Tunisia from a tactical perspective.
In the event the Eagles of Carthage utilise the same formation as they did against Denmark, Kewell believes Australia shouldn’t play a central striker, but instead select an extra midfielder with two wingers sitting high.

“I’m slightly different, I like to be creative in the way that I think,” Kewell told SBS Sport.

Kewell believes his tactical approach to playing against a back three would allow the Socceroos to outnumber Tunisia in key attacking areas,

There is speculation the African side could revert to a 4-3-3 formation and opt for a more attacking approach, with the winning team in a strong position to reach the knockout stage.
“This is the game both teams need to win,” Kewell said.

“I believe (4-3-3) that this is more of a formation that they will adapt.”

If Graham Arnold sets up the Socceroos in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, Kewell said the result of 1 on 1 duels will be vital to determining the outcome.

“The one thing Mitchell Duke must do and he does it well because he’s an old fashioned striker, whatever side the ball is on, he must be on that side.”

Ajdin Hrustic is looming as a certain starter after missing the opening game through injury while Jamie Maclaren could be in line to start up front.

“If we go with someone like Maclaren, he’s got the movement, he’s got the idea and I quite like that.”

“The one thing that defenders do not like, is running back towards goals.”
