Spain and Costa Rica will progress if...

  • Both teams win
  • Spain win and Costa Rica draw
  • Spain draw and Costa Rica win - Costa Rica top group

Spain and Japan will progress if...

  • All teams draw
  • Japan wins and Germany and Costa Rica draw - Japan top group (though Costa Rica would qualify if, uh, Japan beat Spain by a whopping 14 goals)
  • Japan-Spain draw and Germany wins (Germany qualify if they overtake Japan on goal difference, goals scored, or fair play)
  • Japan and Germany win - Japan top group (Germany qualify if they overtake Spain on goal difference, goals scored, or fair play)

Spain and Germany will progress if...

  • Both teams win
  • Germany wins, Spain draws and Germany overtake Japan on goal difference, goals scored, or fair play

Japan and Costa Rica will progress if...

  • Both teams win (Costa Rica only top group if they win by 6 more than Japan)
  • Japan wins by 14 goals over Spain and Germany and Costa Rica draw - Japan top group (yes it's technically possible)

Japan and Germany will progress if...

  • Both teams win and Germany overtake Spain on goal difference, goals scored, or fair play

The consensus

Every team in Group E can still qualify for the last 16.

Spain will qualify with a win or draw to Japan. They can also qualify with a loss unless Costa Rica win or Germany wins and overtake Spain on goal difference.

Costa Rica will be guaranteed a play-offs berth if they win, or if they draw and Spain wins.

Japan will secure a play-offs berth if they win, if all teams draw or Japan draws and Germany wins but don't overtake Japan on goal difference, goals scored or fair play.

Germany will need to win to earn their entry into the round of 16. They'll also need Spain to win, or to be ahead of Japan on goal difference if Spain draws. If Germany win and close the 8-goal difference and 6-goals scored gap to Spain, and Japan also wins, Germany could also qualify, but that's a big ask.
