Over 20,000 fans are estimated to have watched the Socceroos go down 2-1 against Lionel Messi and Argentina at Tumbalong Park on Sunday morning (AEDT).
And despite Australia's unfortunate exit, the opportunity to watch the final three matches featuring the four best teams of the World Cup amongst football-loving crowds is an exciting one.
The first semi-final takes place on Wednesday, December 14 with kick-off from 6am (AEDT) and the second also kicks off at 6am (AEDT) on Thursday, December 15.
The final is set for Monday, December 19 with kick-off from 2am when the 2022 champions will finally be crowned.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the decision to bring back the live site was an easy one after seeing the droves of people who turned up to cheer on the Socceroos side-by-side.
“The thousands of people who screamed, cheered and punched the air for the Socceroos might not have their team to cheer on in the finals," Perrotet said in a statement issued on Monday (AEDT).
"But the best footballers in the world are still competing for the ultimate trophy so it is fitting that we can turn the live screens back on at Darling Harbour for the finals.
“Being in the crowd on Sunday and celebrating and commiserating as one – there is no better way to watch football than all together.”
NSW Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said he hoped the introduction of the live sites for these World Cup matches would help to carry on the momentum Australian football has gained following the Socceroos' run.
“The Socceroos may be out, but there are still some exciting matches ahead, so it’s great that fans will be able to return to Tumbalong Park for the semi-finals and final in what will be an unparalleled atmosphere,” Henskens said.
“NSW is the sporting capital of Australia and this live site will be set up and supported to ensure everyone can watch the world’s best fight it out for World Cup glory.
“This is giving football in Australia and in our State great momentum going forward, with Sydney set to host 11 matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year.”
