Costa Rica win it with only shot on target
Following a first half largely devoid of highlights, the Group E match-up looked headed for a stalemate - but winger Keysher Fuller had other ideas.
After pouncing on a clumsy error from Japan, midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda offloaded a pass to Fuller, who fired over the head of opening group match hero Shuichi Gonda – the Japanese goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball but doing not enough keep out Costa Rica’s only shot on target for the entire 90 minutes.
The Central American side got back to winning ways after a demoralising 7-0 defeat to Spain in their opening match, while Japan dropped points for the first time in Qatar despite having more of the possession in the match as well as managing 13 shots to Costa Rica’s four.
Morocco score late double to stun Belgium
The Moroccans secured yet another upset victory in the 2022 tournament after scoring two late goals to stun 2018 third-placed Belgium 2-0, throwing a huge spanner in the works of Group F’s final matches.
Defender Romain Saiss miraculously found his way past Courtois and the Belgian defence to open the scoring with a free-kick from a near-impossible angle, before star attacker Hakim Kiyech set up substitute Zakaria Aboukhal for the second with a cool-headed finish during stoppage time.
Davies nets fastest goal of the tournament, Canada’s first ever WC goal
Canada got off to a flyer in their match against 2018 runners-up Croatia, with star attacker Alphonso Davies heading emphatically past Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic after getting on the end of a superb cross from Tajon Buchanan.
The Croatian defence was caught napping as Davies’ netted Canada’s first ever goal scored at a World Cup – the winger recovering after his penalty in their opening group match against Belgium was kept out by Thibaut Courtois.
Although they eventually succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Croatians and were resultantly knocked out of the tournament, it was still a moment to savour for Canadian fans – at least for 34 minutes when they held the advantage.
Füllkrug’s late strike keeps Germany alive
Germany escaped exiting Qatar 2022 in the group stage for the time being, after substitute Niclas Füllkrug netted home an 83rd minute equaliser to cancel out Alvaro Morata’s opener for Spain in an entertaining 1-1 draw.
The 2014 winners’ hopes of progressing through to the knock-out stages now rest on the outcome of their final group match against Costa Rica, while Spain will look to consolidate first place in the group in their final match against Japan.
