Tottenham would go on to win Wednesday's (AEDT) match, but Son was shepherded from the field shortly after his aerial duel with Mbemba, with the club later confirming he had sustained a fracture around his eye and would require surgery.
"We can confirm that Heung-min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye," the club said in a statement.

"Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course."

With Korea Republic's first World Cup match set for November 24, and the traditional recovery period for a broken eye socket in the region of 3-4 weeks, it will be a question of how well Son recovers to determine if he will line up in the group stages for his national team.

The 30-year-old is his country's equal top scorer at FIFA World Cups, with his three goals tied with Park Ji-sung and Ahn Jung-hwan. He has scored 35 goals for Korea Republic across 105 appearances.
