Germany Stats
· Germany must win to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout phase. They are guaranteed to progress if they win AND Japan lose against Spain. If they win and the other game ends in a draw or Japan win, goal difference will come into the equation.
· Germany can be eliminated in the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup. They had never been knocked out at the first group stage prior to 2018.
· In the nine World Cups from 1982 to 2014, Germany finished in the top three seven times (winners twice, runners-up three times, third place twice).
· Since lifting the trophy in 2014, Germany have won only one of their five World Cup games (W1-D1-L3), a 2-1 victory against Sweden in the 2018 group stage (95th-minute winner by Toni Kroos).
· Germany can remain winless in all matches at a single World Cup for the second time, after 1938: eliminated in the round of last 16 (first stage of that tournament) by Switzerland: 4-2 defeat in a replay after a 1-1 draw after extra time.
· Germany won each of their first eight matches under Hansi Flick, but have won only two of their 10 games since (W2-D6-L2).
· Thilo Kehrer, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are one yellow card away from a suspension.

Costa Rica Stats
· Costa Rica qualify for the knockout phase if they A) win, or B) draw AND Japan lose against Spain. A draw and Japan win is unlikely to be enough for Los Ticos because of Spain's vastly superior goal difference.
· Costa Rica progressed to the knockout phase in two of their five World Cup appearances: 1990 (round of last 16, eliminated by Czechoslovakia) and 2014 (quarter-finals, eliminated by Netherlands).
· Costa Rica can win consecutive World Cup matches for the second time, after defeating Uruguay (3-1) and Italy (1-0) in their opening two games of the 2014 group stage.
· Costa Rica's only shot on target at the 2022 World Cup was Keysher Fuller's 81st-minute goal against Japan (1-0 win).
· Costa Rica have only conceded as many goals at a single World Cup in 2006 (9) as in 2022 (7). Of the nine goals they conceded in 2006, four were to hosts Germany and three were to Luis Fernando Suárez's Ecuador.
· At the 2018 World Cup, only Panama (11) and Tunisia (8) conceded more than seven goals in the group stage.
· Keylor Navas and Celso Borges (both 10) are Costa Rica's joint-leading World Cup appearance makers. The pair are one ahead of Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell and Christian Bolaños (all 9).
· Ruiz (2) is one of three players to score multiple World Cup goals for Costa Rica, alongside Rónald Gómez and Paulo Wanchope (both 3). Ruiz netted his two goals in 2014. He has made one appearance at the 2022 World Cup thus far, playing 30 minutes against Spain (7-0 loss).
· Luis Fernando Suárez was Ecuador manager when they were beaten 3-0 by Germany in Berlin in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup. That match was in the final round of group stage fixtures when both teams had already secured qualification for the knockout phase. Costa Rica were also in that group.
· Francisco Calvo is suspended. Celso Borges, Joel Campbell and Anthony Contreras will be suspended if booked.
