Head-to-Head: Portugal v Switzerland
· Portugal and Switzerland have faced each other 25 times. Switzerland won 11, Portugal won nine and there have been five draws. Both sides scored 34 goals in those matches.

· Portugal have only won more official matches (as recognised by the Portugal federation) against Luxembourg (17), Denmark (11), Hungary (10) and Cyprus (10) than against Switzerland (9). Yet, Portugal have only lost more official matches against France (19), Spain (18), Italy (18) and Brazil (13) than against Switzerland (11).

· The sides have never met in the World Cup but did meet in the 2008 EUROs group stage. Jakob Kuhn's Switzerland beat Luiz Felipe Scolari's Portugal 2-0. Hakan Yakin (younger brother of Murat Yakin) scored twice. Pepe was in the starting line-up for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute.

· Portugal (W6-D1-L3) have won six of the last 10 games against Switzerland (including a 3-1 win in the 2018/19 Nations League semi-finals). After beating Switzerland 4-0 at home in June in the 2022/23 Nations League (two goals by Ronaldo), they lost 1-0 the following week in Geneva.

· Club teammates who could face each other in this game include Rúben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Manuel Akanji (all Manchester City) and Raphaël Guerreiro and Gregor Kobel (both Borussia Dortmund).

· Switzerland have not scored a knockout goal at the World Cup since losing 7-5 to Austria in the quarter-finals of the 1954 World Cup on 26 June 1954. · Excluding shootouts, none of the last six penalties taken against Switzerland with Yann Sommer as goalkeeper were scored (four saved, one hit bar, one over the bar). The first of those six spot-kicks was by Costa Rica's Bryan Ruiz at the 2018 World Cup. His effort hit the bar, came off the back of Sommer's head and went in for an own goal.

· Sommer was not part of the Swiss squad for their match against Serbia in the group stage (3-2 win).

· Switzerland lost their only penalty shootout at the World Cup 3-0 to Ukraine (0-0 after 120 minutes) in the 2006 round of last 16.
