Portugal Stats
· Portugal progressed from both of their two World Cup quarter-finals: a 5-3 win against DPR Korea in Liverpool in 1966 (including four goals by Eusébio after they had trailed 3-0 after 25 minutes) and a penalty shootout victory versus England in Gelsenkirchen in 2006 (Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning penalty in the shootout). They were eliminated in the semi-finals in both of those tournaments.
· The only other teams to compete in multiple World Cup quarter-finals without ever being eliminated at that stage are Austria (1934, 1954) and Croatia (1998, 2018).
· Portugal scored as many goals in their 6-1 win against Switzerland in the round of last 16 as they had in their previous eight World Cup knockout phase matches combined.
· Portugal scored in each of their last 10 World Cup matches, since a 4-0 defeat versus Germany in the 2014 group stage. This is the longest active World Cup scoring streak of any team.
· Portugal won three of their four major tournament (World Cup/EUROs) penalty shootouts. The only defeat was versus Spain in the EURO 2012 semi-finals. The three victories were all in the quarter-finals: versus England (EURO 2004 and 2006 World Cup) and Poland (EURO 2016).
· Fernando Santos is the first Portuguese manager to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Portugal had a Brazilian manager when they reached this stage in 1966 (Otto Glória) and 2006 (Luiz Felipe Scolari).
· Santos has guided a team to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, at the third attempt. He was eliminated in the round of last 16 in charge of Greece in 2014 (versus Costa Rica) and Portugal in 2018 (versus Uruguay).
· Bruno Fernandes, Danilo Pereira, João Félix, Rúben Dias and Rúben Neves are one yellow card away from a suspension.

Morocco Stats
· Morocco can become the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
· The three previous African teams to reach the World Cup quarter-finals were all eliminated despite being level after the regulation 90 minutes: Cameroon in 1990 (lost 3-2 after extra time versus England in Naples), Senegal in 2002 (lost 1-0 in golden goal extra time versus Türkiye in Osaka) and Ghana in 2010 (lost on penalties versus Uruguay in Johannesburg).
· Morocco can become the lowest-ranked team in the FIFA world rankings to reach the World Cup semi-finals since Türkiye (then ranked 22nd) and Korea Republic (40th) in 2002. Morocco are currently ranked 22nd.
· Morocco became the first African team to win a World Cup penalty shootout when they defeated Spain in the round of last 16 of this tournament. That was the Atlas Lions' second World Cup knockout phase match, after a 1-0 defeat versus West Germany in the round of last 16 in 1986.
· Morocco are unbeaten in five World Cup matches (W2-D3-L0, game decided by a penalty shootout classed as a draw), since a 1-0 defeat against Portugal in the 2018 group stage. This equals the longest World Cup unbeaten run by an African team: also five by Cameroon from 1982 to 1990.
· Morocco kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight matches in all competitions. The only exception in this run was their 2-1 win over Canada in the 2022 World Cup group stage (own goal by Nayef Aguerd).
· Walid Regragui is the first African manager to reach the Word Cup quarter-finals. The three previous African quarter-finalists had managers from Russia (Valeri Nepomniachi for Cameroon in 1990), France (Bruno Metsu for Senegal in 2002) and Serbia (Milovan Rajevac for Ghana in 2010).
· Morocco are unbeaten in all seven games under Regragui (W4-D3-L0, match decided by a penalty shootout classed as a draw). No opposition player scored against the Atlas Lions in those seven fixtures (the only goal they conceded in that run was an own goal by Nayef Aguerd).
· Abdelhamid Sabiri, Romain Saïss and Sofyan Amrabat are one yellow card away from a suspension.

Head-to-Head: Morocco v Portugal
· This is the third match between Morocco and Portugal. Both previous meetings were also at the World Cup.
· Morocco's first World Cup win was a 3-1 victory against Portugal in Guadalajara in the 1986 group stage. Abderrazak Khaïri (19', 28') and Abdelkrim Merry (62') scored for the Atlas Lions, and Diamantino Miranda (80') netted for the Seleção. That win ensured Morocco qualified for the World Cup knockout phase for the first time.
· Portugal defeated Morocco 1-0 in Moscow in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup. The goal was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo (4') to eliminate the Atlas Lions after only two games.
· African teams progressed from only two of their 11 World Cup knockout phase matches against UEFA opposition: Senegal's 2-1 win in golden goal extra time versus Sweden in the 2002 round of last 16 and Morocco's penalty shootout victory against Spain in the 2022 round of last 16.
· There have been two World Cup quarter-finals between African and UEFA teams: Cameroon's 3-2 defeat after extra time versus England in 1990 and Senegal's 1-0 loss in golden goal extra time against Türkiye in 2002.
· Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 in the group stage of this tournament. The only team to win multiple games against African opposition at a single World Cup is England in 1990: 1-0 versus Egypt in the group stage and 3-2 after extra time versus Cameroon in the quarter-finals. Note: matches decided by a penalty shootout are classed as a draw.
· Club teammates who could be in opposition in this match are Achraf Hakimi and Danilo Pereira/Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain).
