Costa Rica Stats

· Costa Rica have only conceded as many goals at a single World Cup in 2006 (9) as in 2022 (7). This is Costa Rica's sixth World Cup appearance.

· Celso Borges, Keylor Navas and Bryan Ruiz (9 each) can surpass Christian Bolaños (9) as Costa Rica's all-time leading World Cup appearance maker.

· Ruiz (2) is one of three players to score multiple World Cup goals for Costa Rica, alongside Rónald Gómez and Paulo Wanchope (both 3). Ruiz netted his two goals in 2014.

· Johan Venegas celebrates his 34rd birthday on the day of the match. No Costa Rican player has made a World Cup appearance on his birthday yet. Rodney Wallace was an unused sub on his birthday, when Costa Rica lost 1-0 to Serbia at the 2018 World Cup.

· Joel Campbell made 22 passes in Costa Rica's match against Spain (7-0 loss), with eight of those passes being kick-offs.

Japan Stats
· Japan will qualify for the knockout phase if they win this match AND Germany do not win against Spain. Japan beat Germany 2-1 in Doha ín their opener after trailing 1-0. Ritsu Doan (75') and Takuma Asano (83') secured Japan's win.

· Japan have alternated between group stage exit (1998, 2006, 2014) and round of last 16 exit (2002, 2010, 2018) in their six World Cup appearances. Their knockout phase exits were against Türkiye (1-0 in 2002), Paraguay (on penalties in 2010) and Belgium (3-2 in 2018 after leading 2-0).

· Japan could win their first two World Cup games from the start of a tournament for the first time. No team from the AFC zone have won their opening two matches at a World Cup.

· Japan could win back-to-back World Cup matches for the second time, after beating Russia (1-0) and Tunisia (2-0) on home soil in the group stage in 2002.
