Previously unreleased songs from gay icon George Michael are set to feature on the soundtrack to upcoming holiday film Last Christmas, inspired by the Wham! song of the same name.

Directed by Paul Feig and written by actor Emma Thompson and comedian Bryony Kimmings, the rom-com is reportedly lined up for release next November.

According to a synopsis, the film “follows Kate (played by Game of Thrones's Emilia Clarke), who harrumphs around London, making a bundle of bad decisions which includes her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop."

It continues: "Tom (Crazy Rich Asians actor Henry Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two.”
Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Kimmings said that Michael had signed up to be involved with the project before his death on Christmas day in 2016.

“When I came on board, George was up for it, he’d already signed something to say yes, but he’d passed away, and Greg and Emma were still very keen to write it,” the comedian said.

“[When] I wrote my draft, I tried to slip in some trans people and make sure there was queer politics in there,” she continued

“I don’t know how much of that remains!”

Kimmings said it was important for her to try and maintain some of Michael's legacy in the film.

“I hope that there’s quite an element of queer in there, because you know it’s the story – it’s based on the song, ‘Last Christmas'," she said.

“George was such a massive advocate for gay rights – and a massive gay himself! – so I hope there’s a gay narrative in there."
