After a summer characterised by catastrophic bushfires and extensive smoke cover, parents appear to be relieved that they can send their kids back to school and return to normalcy. With the long summer break finally over, many are rejoicing that their children are returning to classrooms today using the #backtoschool hashtag. One user tweeted, “Love seeing #backtoschool trending because I absolutely can’t stand the holidays and so thankful that kids finally go back. Suckers!”
Another shared their appreciation for the longed-for quiet at home asking, “Is there any quieter place on earth than your home immediately after dropping kids back to school for their first day back after the summer break?!”
Other parents marked milestones using #firstdayofschool as they dropped their children off for their very first day at primary or high school. Voicing their disbelief that their children were growing up so fast and their pride in the little students, parents shared photos of children as they began the 2020 school year.
Teachers also used the hashtag to mark the beginning of the new school year tweeting photographs of their tidy desks, resources for the year and first day hopes and fears. First time teachers also shared their excitement about being on the other side of the desk as they begin their teaching careers. One shared, “I’ve been waiting and dreaming of having my own class now for forever and it just doesn’t feel real that this crazy adventure is starting”.
Even those who are done and dusted with school forever shared their thoughts with one user tweeted, “I don’t actually have children yet but I am stoked that school holidays are over. I will actually be able to shop during my lunch break when I need to without swarms of little people and their slow guardians everywhere. Today is a good day.”

Another, clearly gleeful that they were no longer in school asked everyone to “spare a moment to think of all the teenagers being annoyed by their parents trying to wake them up for the start of the new school year.”
