Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has taken to social media to share his support for members of the trans community.
The US senator tweeted a photo of the trans flag hanging outside his office, writing: “Discrimination has no place in our society. I am proud to display this flag as a symbol of my support for transgender people across the country."
He added: "We must stand with transgender people in all of our communities.”
While the responses were overwhelmingly positive from LGBTIQ+ twitter users, one of the most shared replies came from trans YouTuber Natalie Wynn, who quipped: "Thanks but could you steam it first?" - referring to the flag's clear crease lines.
Sanders has been a vocal advocate for trans rights in recent years, last year slamming Donald Trump's trans military ban in a lengthy Facebook post.
“There is a reason the administration has not provided any scientific evidence to justify this policy: there is no justification for this sort of discrimination," he wrote.
“Transgender people have served and continue to serve our country honorably in the military. Unfortunately, this administration is not treating them honorably.”
Other US politicians to raise the trans flag this week, Trans Visibility Week in the US, include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Pramila Jayapal.
"Proud to hang the trans flag outside of my D.C. office during #TransVisibilityWeek," Jayapal tweeted.
She added: "To my trans constituents and to the entire trans and gender non-conforming community: you are loved, you are strong and you #WontBeErased."
