British drag queen Cheddar Gorgeous has explained why she's decided to organise a mass drag protest to 'welcome' US President Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to the UK.
Penning an op-ed for The Guardian, Gorgeous writes: "Despite claiming on the campaign trail to be 'gay friendly', the Trump administration has unleashed a barrage of policies and amendments that demonstrate the contrary."
News of the protest came after Gorgeous started a Facebook event, calling on "all drag kings, queens, queers and our allies" to march in protest of Donald Trump's planned visit to the UK in July.
"Due to the appalling way the Trump administration has regarded the rights and welfare of LGBTQI communities of the US, the idea of a Trump visit to the UK is unacceptable," the event description reads.
"Let's get visible, stand with our sisters, brothers and others in America, and show that we are a country that celebrates diversity."
Almost 1,000 people have confirmed their attendance, with a further 6,900 people registering their interest in the event.
"When diversity is attacked, it is imperative that marginalised people stay visible, stand up to bullies and engage satirically with what is going on," Cheddar Gorgeous writes, adding that she hopes to coordinate her protest to help amplify others that will be taking place.
"It is important that we stand with others who feel similarly outraged at the way the UK government is failing to stand up to Trump," she writes.
"It is about more than just one group’s interests and needs, and it is vital to stand in solidarity with all marginalised groups who are affected by Trump’s administration and the rhetoric of intolerance that fuels it."
