Broad City's Abbi to explore her sexuality in final season

The upcoming final season of Broad City will see main character Abbi Abrahams explore her sexuality, reflecting actor, writer and producer Abbi Jacobson's real life journey to coming out as queer last year.

Speaking in conversation with The New York Times, Jacobson and co-creator Ilana Glazer discussed Abraham's growth on the show.

"That’s in my book, and I wanted to put that in the show," Jacobson said, referring to her own experiences with sexuality, which she wrote about in her recent memoir I Might Regret This.
"Abbi’s not the fumbling idiot we’re used to seeing, trying to ask someone out. It feels more real."

“She knows how to ask somebody out, and she wants to," Glazer added. "It’s fun to see that."

The pair, who first began working on Broad City as a web series back in 2009, also reflected on the show's innate queerness.

"I really feel like our show has been so queer from the get-go," Jacobson said.

Glazer continued: "Everyone who works with us has gotten queerer and queerer in the past six years. I swear to God."

When questioned about her sexuality by Vanity Fair last year, Jacobson said: “I kind of go both ways; I date men and women."

She added: “They have to be funny, doing something they love. I don’t know — I’ve never really been interviewed about this before.”
