It’s been a rollercoaster ride for fans of Netflix original series Sense8—with the show being cancelled and then semi-revived within the space of a month.
After it was announced that there would be a two-hour special released in 2018—there is now speculation that a full third season could be in the works.
During a Facebook Live event with co-creator Lana Wachowski and actors Toby Onwumere, Brian J. Smith and Max Riemelt—Wachowski let slip that she was already writing season three.
“Because she believes so much in the fans, that they are gonna go out and create so many more fans, Lana is actually going ahead and writing the entire Season 3,” she said.
The Sense8 Twitter account also cryptically hinted that some exciting news would be delivered on August 8.
Netflix announced the show had been cancelled at the beginning of June with the VP of original content—Cindy Holland—writing that: “After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end.”
Then—just a few weeks later—the show’s official Twitter account restored hope to the Sense8 family, writing: “Death doesn't let you say goodbye. 2 hour finale episode in the works. Tell your cluster”.
The tweet was accompanied by a heartbreaking letter from Wachowski, who described the devastating impact the cancellation had had on her, as well as thanking her fans for rallying around the show.
“I had never worked so hard, or put so much of myself into a project as I had with Sense8,” Wachowski wrote.
“And its cancellation hollowed me out. I felt the disappointment of my amazing crew... I felt the sadness of the actors who had given so much of themselves, always finding more whenever the sun broke from the clouds.
“But most of all I felt the heartbreak of our fan... they are unlike any fans I have ever encountered as an artist.
“It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix’s (believe me, they love the show as much as we do but the numbers have always been challenging) to announce there will be another two hour special released next year,” Wachowski continued.
“After that... if this experience has taught me anything, you NEVER know.”
The Sense8 cast members broadcast the Facebook Live event from Vancouver, where they took part in Pride celebrations over the weekend.
Fans of Sense8 have cautiously tweeted about their excitement for Season 3 after seeing the discussion on Facebook—grateful for Wachowki's dedication to the show.
