In the lead-up to this year’s NRL Grand Final, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott made it abundantly clear that he was against US rapper Macklemore performing his 2013 hit, Same Love at half-time.
The ‘No’ vote campaigner wrote on Twitter that “Footy fans shouldn't be subjected to a politicised grand final. Sport is sport!”
Despite Macklemore performing the song yesterday to a joyous crowd, Abbott has continued his criticism of the NRL’s choice of musical act.
“We could have got someone who was A, Australian and, B, not going to be contentious on this current issue,” he told Ray Hadley on 2GB today.
He then pondered some of his favourite musicians, including iconic Brisbane duo, Savage Garden.
Lead singer Darren Hayes, who has been married to his partner Richard Cullen since 2013 and is a vocal supporter of the 'Yes' campaign immediately distanced himself from Abbott.
It's not even the first time an exchange like this has happened. In March 2015 Abbott professed his love for the duo that brought us classics like "To The Moon And Back" and "Truly, Madly, Deeply", saying he was first introduced to their music by his children.
Again, Hayes swiftly wrote back on Twitter: "“I certainly do not listen to Tony Abbott.”
