Demi Lovato has returned to acting with a role on NBC sitcom Will & Grace.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the pop star will appear on three episodes of the show's final season, playing “the role of Jenny, a guarded gal who comes into the life of Will (Eric McCormack) in an unexpected way.”

The news comes as the show's cast-members, including Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally, begin shooting for the long-running program's 18-episode final season - the third since it was revived by NBC in 2016.

“She’s here to have some laughs with us,” Sean Hayes wrote on social media alongside a photo with Lovato, a former child actress who made her debut on Barney & Friends.

“This is SO MUCH FUN.”

“They’re the dream team,” Lovato wrote on Instagram after shooting her first episode.

She added: "Honoured to be a part of this cast. Last night was amazing and I can’t wait to return for more!!!”
“You are so sweet,” Messing commented the post.

“I am so happy you came to play with us! You are now officially part of the family.”

It was announced in July that Will & Grace would be coming to an end for good, with network executives describing the series as a "game changer".

“The impact and legacy of Will & Grace simply can’t be overstated, both as a true game-changer in the portrayal of the LGBTIQ+ community and as one of the finest comedies in television history," NBC Entertainment co-chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy said in a statement.

Show creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan added: “We think of the Will & Grace reboot episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis - 51 is not enough, 53 is too many. That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season of Will & Grace."

Previous big name guest stars include Cher and Madonna.
