"Doctor Who just had the most blatant 'bury your gays' trope moment ever wow."

Fans of BBC series 'Doctor Who' have taken to social media to express their frustration after a new gay character was introduced during the show's New Year Day special, then killed off within seconds.

The character, a security guard credited as Kevin, was played by actor Connor Calland.

During his one and only scene, the guard is questioned by character Lin, played by Charlotte Ritchie, over who had access to a particular fingerprint-controlled door.

“Today, just me," Kevin replied.

"Most secure digits in Yorkshire. That’s what I tell my boyfriend, anyway. I probably shouldn’t be telling you that, I’m new at this.”

Kevin was dead within 25 seconds.

While 'Doctor Who' has been celebrated in the past for its diverse casting and representation, some fans suggested Kevin's brief cameo was an example of the 'bury your gays trope', whereby gay characters are seen as being more expendable than their heteronormative counterparts.
