Israel's first winning Eurovision entrant since 1998 has declined an invitation to accept an award in Russia, saying that she'll be busy with something "much more important" - marching in Tel Aviv Pride.
Netta Barzilai, who won the coveted music trophy last week with her quirky performance of "Toys", was offered a "Transformation" award by Russian network (and MTV equivalent) Muz-TV.
According to reports by Russian website Super, Barzilai responded to Muz-TV by saying that the June 8th ceremony would interfere with her Pride commitments. She went on to voice her concerns that Pride festivals and members of the LGBTIQ+ community weren't welcome in Russia.
The 25-year-old singer has been celebrated for her feminist lyrics and offering an alternative representation of the Israeli community.
“This is the greatest thing happening to people — choosing something different," she said following her win.
She added: "Choosing something that’s evolved. Choosing 2018.”
“How great that we got to change the image [of Israel]… We deserve it.”
