A new film directed by Chanya Button will explore Virginia Woolf’s relationship with fellow writer, Vita Sackville-West.
Eva Green and Gemma Arterton—who have both previously starred in the James Bond franchise—have been cast to play the literary couple in Vita and Virginia.
Woolf and Sackville-West’s romance blossomed after they met in 1922, and—though both were married—their affair continued for over a decade and inspired Woolf’s novel, Orlando.
Sackville-West’s son Nigel Nicholson has previously commented that: “The effect of Vita on Virginia is all contained in Orlando.
“The longest and most charming love letter in literature, in which she explores Vita, weaves her in and out of the centuries.”
Director Button says the film will be set in 1927, during the time that Woolf wrote the novel.
“Vita & Virginia will be a visceral love story, a vivid exploration of creativity, and an energised perspective on one of our most iconic writers,” says Button.
Protagonist Pictures CEO Mike Goodridge says audiences will have a chance to see a different side of the famous author.
“This is a playful and sexual Virginia Woolf, far removed from the gloom often associated with her, and Vita Sackville-West is a vivacious and flamboyant character who dominates high society in London in the 1920s,” says Goodridge.
The film has been adapted from a stage play by Eileen Atkins and will launch to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin this week.
