Ru Paul’s Drag Race star Gia Gunn came out as transgender earlier this year on the International Transgender Day of Visibility.
“I thought I would dedicate today in the spirit of being visible to share my transition with all of you,” Gunn told her fans in an Instagram video.
"I have been on hormone replacement therapy for about a year and I identify as female and I am indeed transgender.”
Now, the Season 6 queen is celebrating another milestone in her transition—officially changing her name and gender on her birth certificate.
“No document will ever validate or justify my gender, but I am so proud of myself for getting this done! See your LGBT center for help,” she tweeted—along with a picture of her Illinois birth record.
In April, Gunn wrote on Twitter: “Today is a new beginning! I had my official court appearance for my legal name to be changed to Gia...my wish was granted!”
While some require proof that the individual has undergone surgery, states including California, Oregon, New York and Massachusetts allow people to change their name and sex with a doctor’s note saying they’ve undergone “clinically appropriate treatment”. This means that proof of surgery or hormone treatment isn’t necessary.
Tennessee, Ohio and Idaho are the three US states that do not allow birth certificate changes.
