The Upasana College of Nursing in southern India is prohibiting students from locking their doors while changing, fearful that female students are having sex with each other.
The college has also banned the use of mobile phones on campus and blocked internet access in the library—claiming that students were only using the web to search for porn.
“Girls in the hostel have been instructed not to lock their doors, even while changing clothes,” student Veena V S told The News Minute.
“The principal says we are closing rooms to secretly use mobile phones or because we are homosexuals. We have been told to just keep a chair near the door, but we can’t close it.”
Students at the college have been protesting the new rules and demanding the resignation of principal MP Jessykutty.
The students are accusing Jessykutty of discriminating against students based on their caste, invading their privacy and handing out fines.
The principal has also warned members of lower castes not to protest, saying they will face harsh punishments if they do.
