Following large protests over the weekend, representatives for the LGBTIQ+ community in Israel have presented a list of demands for "equality and freedom".
Endorsed by 14 local LGBTIQ+ organisations, the demands were shared at a press conference yesterday, requesting nothing short of “full equality” and an “end to discrimination”, while threatening further demonstrations if requests were not met, reports The Times of Israel.
Chen Arieli, chairwoman of the Association for LGBT, told Hadashot news that if the community's demands were not met by the government, they would "continue the struggle, as we have been doing even before the big protest."
She continued: "The protest proved that we have strength in the field.”
“We need to take a position of strength and change the balance of power."
Protests over the weekend were attended by an estimated 60,000 people, following gay men being excluded from updated surrogacy laws.
“It is a symbolic measure, but one that shows real support,” Julien Bahloul, spokesman for the Association of Gay Fathers in Israel, told AFP following the protests on Sunday.
Responding to mounting pressure, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuv owed to support a additional bill legalising surrogacy for gay couples in the near future.
