As the saying goes: Stop. Look both ways. Be inclusive.
Members of the LGBTIQ+ community in Manchester were pleasantly surprised earlier this week to find their city looking a little more diverse than usual, with queer-themed traffic lights installed for pedestrians ahead of Manchester Pride.
The altered crossing signals feature four designs: two male symbols, two female symbols, a male and a female symbol, and a transgender symbol.
The lights were the result of a partnership between the local public transport body and tech giant Seimens.
“We are proud, in conjunction with our traffic signals contractor Siemens, to transform some of the traffic lights around the Gay Village for Pride,” said Bob Morris of Transport for Greater Manchester.
He continued: “Hopefully they’ll give visitors and residents a special welcome as they enjoy the festivities over the Big Weekend.”
“It’s great to see Siemens stepping out in support of LGBT+ people,” added Mark Fletcher of Manchester Pride.
According to LGBTQ Nation, 34 of the Pride lights were installed around the queer hub of Piccadilly.
