While open to a future career as an engineer, the student from Nottingham is set to become the youngest person to conduct a 75-piece orchestra when he leads the city's Symphony Orchestra as part of their 'Animal Magic' show at the Royal Concert Hall on April 2.
Just by turning up to the gig next month, Smith will break the conducting record, previously held by 14 year-old Jose Angel Salazar who claimed the record after leading the Venezuelan youth orchestra in 2012.
At age 11, Smith can already play the drums, guitar, piano and the viola, while his music teacher Derek Williams telling ITV that he is one of the most gifted kids he has worked with.
"I spotted Matthew's musical talent very early on in his musical tuition as I've been teaching him violin for five years," Williams tells ITV.
"There aren't many children who have the ability to conduct a 75-strong orchestra from memory and it's a really incredible thing to witness."
As for Williams, he is keen to put his musical skills to the test having been inspired to pick up the baton after seeing another young musician conduct a piece in an online video.
"There are some difficult parts where the music gets faster so I have to move my arms more but I'm getting the hang of it.
"I'm really excited to put my skills to the test."
