Natalie Portman has weighed in on rumours that her character in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder could battle breast cancer, admitting she's intrigued by the storyline.

In the original Thor comic books, Jane Foster, Portman's character, is ravaged with cancer before picking up the infamous hammer and becoming Mighty Thor.

"It’s just very rare that these kinds of big entertainment films look at more serious, real-life issues," Portman told Variety.

"I really don’t know anything about it," she added.

"I haven’t seen anything, but I’ve heard the same rumours as you have, and it’s exciting to think about."
Waititi had previously told Variety that Jane Foster's cancer storyline was a possibility for the highly anticipated film.

"I think that’s a really powerful part of the books," he commented.

"I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally I really love that storyline."

He added: "But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen."

In her interview with Variety, Portman went on to sing the praises of Captain Marvel star Brie Larson.

“I was actually really inspired by her training for Captain Marvel,” she said. “It was so incredible what she was able to do.”

She continued: “It’s pretty awesome, and I’m grateful to be around someone inspiring like her"
