"It's like Mad Max out here," says one of the characters in the first trailer for Netflix's new coming-of-age flick, Alex Strangelove.
He continues: "You've got guys doing guys, girls doing girls, girls turning into guys and doing girls who used to do girls and guys!"
The film, which is set to premiere on Netflix in June, is the latest in a string of teenage rom-coms tackling themes of queer love, sex and relationships.
Directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) and produced by Ben Stiller, Alex Strangelove appears to have no qualms getting messy in the exploration of teenage sexuality.
The film tells the story of Alex Truelove, played by Daniel Doheny, who appears happy with his "wonderful girlfriend" - that is, until he meets Elliot, played by Antonio Marziale.
"There's this guy who I'm pretty sure has a crush on me," Alex tells a friend nervously. "And... I guess I'm not repulsed by the idea."
Johnson describes the film as “a fun, funny, and flirty film located down the street from Pretty in Pink, around the corner from Superbad, and right next door to new neighbor Love, Simon.”
