As marchers for Saturday night's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras finalise their costumes and learn their last minute dance moves, we walked around the marshalling area at Sydney's Hyde Park to hear why they're so excited to hit Oxford Street.

Here's what they had to say:

Sarah

WHAT MATTERS: What matters the most to me is the whole aspect of getting back to community and making sure the communities impacted by Australia's bushfires get the help they need.

WHAT MATTERS: What matters most to us is appreciation. Having a chance to show who we really are. Especially because we were so oppressed for so long, this is our chance to celebrate who we are. It's one day of the year we don't have to be ashamed of our sexuality.

Reg

FLOAT: ACON

WHAT MATTERS: How our community cares for each other. In 2019 NSW continued to record low rates of HIV and that's because we're mobilised and engaged to prevent HIV transmissions. What matters to ACON is saying 'thank you'.

Brian, Jonathan and Stephen

WHAT MATTERS: What matters most to us is hydration. Water. Make sure you stay hydrated this Mardi Gras season everyone!

Brittany, Brianna and Rhys

WHAT MATTERS: Love and appreciation. We just want to spread the love.

WHAT MATTERS: What matters most to me is that we party, party, party!

Claire

FLOAT: Hoola-hooping against climate change

WHAT MATTERS: I feel like we need to do more on climate change, and just because our Prime Minister is ... doesn't mean we can't step up and demand action.

Roland, Cyll and Mark

FLOAT: Fetish Australia

WHAT MATTERS: Representing Australia's leather and fetish communities with pride. Adding a visual presence; we're such a small segment of the LGBTIQ+ community, it's important that we're seen and have representation.

Kaz and Lottie

FLOAT: Witches, Warlocks and Whatsoever casting spells against religious discrimination

WHAT MATTERS: What matters to us at the moment is fighting the religious discrimination bill.
The Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras 2020: Live Stream will be available to watch here from Saturday, 29th February 2020 at 07:30 PM.
