"Our identity matters": #saymyname goes viral

The #saymyname hashtag was sparked after Senator David Perdue made fun of Vice-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris' name.

The hashtag #saymyname is trending online after an American politician mispronounced Kamala Harris' name.

The hashtag was sparked after Senator David Perdue, a Georgia Republican made fun of Vice-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris saying "Kah-mah-la or Kah-ma-la or Kamamboamamla or however you say it," at a presidential rally.
The remarks provoked a series of tweets from people proudly sharing the cultural meaning and pronunciation of their names.

"Meaning: Mother of Many!  A South African 👨🏿‍⚕️ on my campus pronounces it, Na’Emeka. The irony: All my children are my students! I wouldn’t have had it any other way! My name is echoed in THEIR ♥️! My name matters to me!" one woman tweeted.
Another woman on Twitter said her name had African origins and meant 'beautiful vision'.

"Da•Ma•Li ! An African name meaning ‘beautiful vision’ granted to me by she who birthed me. The Simpletons can willfully mispronounce it but the collective power punch of our ancestors will teach em," she wrote on Twitter.
"I'm a proud Latina and honored to carry my ancestors’ legacy," wrote Eneida Roman.
"Our #identity matters," wrote Jennee Baugham.
