The mayor of Paris has hit back at the vandals who attacked one of the city's rainbow crossings, announcing that the colourful public artwork - commissioned for Pride, Marche des Fiertés - would now be made permanent.
The popular four-way crossing was vandalised twice in one week, with phrases including “LGBT get out of France” and “LGBT dictatorship” written in white paint.
"Paris is a city of refuge that embraces Republican values of freedom, equality and fraternity," the city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, tweeted on Wednesday.
She continued: "In order for these values to be recorded forever, the rainbow pedestrian crossings created for Gay Pride will be made permanent!"
Hidalgo added that the vandalism "wouldn't go unpunished".
Following repeated vandalism of a Pride installation in Warsaw last month, politicians installed a permanent artwork made entirely out of light and mist.
It was last month announced by Lord Clover Moore that Sydney will be getting a permanent rainbow crossing
