At a time when many magazines around the world are closing, one magazine is going in the opposite direction by relaunching a print only title, ten years after its last issue was published. Playgirl magazine is hitting the shelves this week with the pregnant 45-year-old actress, Chloe Sevigny, on the cover.
However, the magazine has relaunched with 2020 values very much underlying its ethos.
The magazine's editor-in-chief, Skye Parrott, told Observer about her hopes for the magazine: “The world we all live in was created by men, and so it is centred around male values. I wanted to create a magazine that could offer an alternate point of view – the feminine,” Parrott said. “I thought deeply about what a feminist publication could be, what it could achieve, what stories it should tell and how they’re told."
On social media however, some people were hoping for a return to Playgirl's former roots that once included nude male models posing for their centrefold.
2020's Playgirl does have nudes but they aren't what many would expect. The centrefold remains but it isn't as one would expect. Instead it is of a man sitting in a vulnerable pose.
“For a man, nudity means sex; for a woman, it means you’re exposed,” Parrott said. “It’s a different lens and, hopefully, a different perspective.”
Many people it seems are excited about the relaunch.
