RuPaul has taken to social media in a rare break from his usual on-brand messaging, telling followers to stop trying to shame US President Donald Trump.

The creator and host of RuPaul's Drag Race tweeted the message in response to a billboard in Phoenix, Arizona, which depicts Trump standing between two nuclear explosions and dollar symbols manipulated to look like swastikas.

"STOP trying to shame him," RuPaul wrote.

He added: "You cannot shame the shameless."

"Way past time for a different approach. #FollowTheMoney."

Earlier this year, RuPaul opened up to Variety about his views on Trump, calling his election to power a "manifestation" of "ego-dominance".

"Trump is the poster child for ego and that braggart mentality," he said, adding that he believes "the pendulum will swing the other way."

He continued: “What’s so strange is that we all grew up watching Bond films and movies where the villain is very obvious and it’s very clear when you look at a character what their intentions are and what they’re all about, but here we are, and the villain sold himself to the world and the world bought it."

According to reports by The Independent, the billboard in question was commissioned by Phoenix-based art gallery in response to Trump's deportation plans - with the artist, Karen Fiorito, refusing to remove the statement piece despite receiving multiple death threats.
