A lesbian couple in Texas have fought tradition for the chance to be named 'homecoming royalty'.
High school students Cecilia McBride and Story Dornsife were each nominated for homecoming court by classmates at Stephen F. Austin High School last week, according to the Star Telegram.
However, the pair were informed that regardless of who got the most votes, there would be one prom king and one prom queen - making it impossible for same sex couples to be crowned together.
“They said, ‘we don’t do two queens, we don’t do two kings, it has to be a king and a queen,” McBride said in an interview with Texas radio station KXAN.
She continued: “Because a king has to be male and a queen has to be female, it’s impossible for a gay couple to win. I basically told them right away, this isn’t okay."
"I was almost in tears — I was furious.”
However, with a second lesbian pair also nominated, Austin High Principal Amy Taylor decided to change with the times, adjusting the makeup of 'homecoming court' to honour two men and two women, regardless of coupling.
While it was a small victory for McBride and Dornsife, not everyone was happy with the decision.
Texas Values, a local religious organisation, told KXAN: “It’s sad that a long-held tradition of simply honoring a girl and a boy for homecoming has been dethroned for the sake of political correctness.”
