If early reviews are anything to go by, we could very well have a new queer classic on our hands in the shape of Disobedience.
The forthcoming film is about a woman named Ronit [Rachel Weisz], who returns to the community that shunned her decades earlier for her attraction to childhood friend Esti [Rachel McAdams]. Once back, their mutual attraction reignites, pushing them to explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.
Speaking to Logo, Weisz admits that the love scenes in Disobedience involved "a lot less stubble than what I’m used to."
"The scenes between [characters] Ronit and Esti are powerful because they are meaningful and emotional," she says.
"It’s a moment of true, intense passion. It’s also the rekindling of an adolescent connection. The passion between them is very meaningful and that’s what’s captured. Both women can be their true selves together - especially Esti (McAdams)," she adds.
"Her orgasm is like a cathartic release. It’s about freedom."
Based on the 2006 Naomi Alderman novel of the same name, the film is the latest from Chilean director Sebastian Lelio, whose last film Fantastic Woman won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film this year.
"Though it’s not the most uplifting story, it’s still an inspiring and empowering one," Weisz says of the film.
"It’s about what it means to be free. We don’t all have to fit into mainstream’s society little boxes.”
